IT Band Syndrome

Picture
The Iliotibial band is a thick fibrous tissue that runs down the outside of your leg and begins at your hip and ends below the knee on the shin bone.
IT band syndrome usually occurs over the outside of the knee and movement associated with this area will usually be painful.
This is common in people that suddenly increase their level of activity such as a runner or cyclist who all of a sudden increases their mileage.  It can also be seen in people with gait problems or leg length differences.

Treatment
Rest is a very important part in treating IT band syndrome.  Avoid activity that causes pain for several weeks with a gradual return to normal activity.
Ice will also help bring down inflammation in the area and reduce swelling.
Consult your physician before using any type of anti-inflammatory medication.
Working with a physical therapist to work on a strengthening and stretching routine will also be very helpful in preventing this from happening again.
