Groin Strain
The groin consists of a group of muscles on the inside of your thighs that pull your legs together. These muscles are also very important in many different sports and injury in this area is very common.
A groin sprain is an injury to this muscle group and is commonly a minor muscle tear but in the worst of cases a severe partial tear or complete tear is possible. Strain in this muscle group usually occurs from sprinting, changing direction rapidly or fast movements of the legs against resistance like kicking a soccer ball.
Symptoms are usually pain the inner thigh which may not be noticed until you have stopped exercising for the day. The area may also be very tender to the touch and normal walking may not bring on pain except when turning directions or running.
Treatment
Rest is very important. Avoid activity that causes pain for several weeks with a gradual return to normal activity.
Ice will also help bring down inflammation in the area and reduce swelling.
Consult your physician before using any type of anti-inflammatory medication.
In the worst cases, surgery may be an option.
Your physical therapist will give you stretches and exercises to help with a fast recovery and educate you on how to prevent this from happening again.
